2024 Shelby Super Snake F-150

David Chen runs a 60-person software company in Denver. He is, by his own description, 'not a car person.' He couldn't tell you the difference between a coupe and a truck when he walked into Springs Supercars fourteen months ago. John McMurray showed him the 2024 Shelby Super Snake F-150 anyway.

"John said, 'Just sit in it for a second.' I sat in it. He closed the door. The engine was off. I said, 'Okay, I'll take it.' I had no idea what I was about to experience."

— David C.

The 2024 Shelby Super Snake F-150 is built on a Ford F-150 Lariat 4x4, then transformed by Shelby American with a supercharged 5.0L Coyote V8 — a 3.0L Whipple supercharger pushing output to 785 horsepower. It does 0-60 in 3.4 seconds. It has a custom Borla exhaust and a lowered suspension that makes it look like it's crouching. It is, functionally, a street-legal race truck.

David learned all of this afterward, because he needed to explain to his wife why he'd already booked it again.

The Monthly Ritual

The routine is now fixed. David leaves Denver at 5:30am, arrives in Colorado Springs at 6:45, has coffee at a café on Tejon Street, and picks up the Super Snake from John at 7:00. The route never changes: west on Highway 24 through Manitou Springs, up through Ute Pass to Woodland Park, then the back road loop south toward Divide, then home. Total drive: about 90 minutes.

'I've tried to explain to people why I do this and it sounds insane,' he said. 'I drive three hours round-trip from Denver to spend 90 minutes in a truck. But there's something about the complete sensory demand of that machine on those roads that empties my head completely. I get back to Denver and I'm sharp for the rest of the week.'

On John McMurray

David credits part of his enjoyment to the relationship he's built with John. 'Most rental companies treat you like a liability. John treats you like a guest. He knows what I like, he has the car prepped exactly right, and if there's any update with the vehicle he tells me before I get in. That trust makes a huge difference when you're driving something this fast.'

"I've recommended Springs Supercars to four people. All four have booked. That's not an accident — that's a company run by someone who genuinely cares."
