Alpine Gold Above Georgetown
Guanella Pass Road climbs from the historic mining town of Georgetown (8,530 ft) to a 11,669-foot summit with unobstructed views of Mount Bierstadt — one of Colorado's most accessible 14ers — and the surrounding wilderness. The entire road is paved and maintained, making it a rare alpine supercar experience that most mountain passes can't offer. In September and October the aspen gold here is among the finest in the entire state.
The Route
Georgetown → Guanella Pass Summit → Grant — ~24 miles, 1–2 hours
Georgetown (8,530 ft) — 45 min from Colorado Springs
Georgetown is worth arriving early for. The Victorian silver-mining town has great breakfast cafes on Rose Street. Fill the tank before heading up — there's no fuel on the pass.
Lower Canyon (Miles 0–5)
The road follows Clear Creek through a narrow canyon before breaking out into open mountain terrain. The first views of the surrounding peaks appear here — dramatic and immediate.
Abyss Lake Trailhead (Mile 10)
A popular hiking access point at treeline. From here the road breaks above the trees into alpine tundra. The views open up completely and you begin to see the summit ahead.
Guanella Pass Summit (11,669 ft)
The summit parking area offers 360-degree views. Mount Bierstadt (14,065 ft) towers to the southeast. On a clear day you can see dozens of peaks. This is the picture-perfect stop.
Descent to Grant (Miles 14–24)
The south side descends through narrower, twistier terrain to the small town of Grant on US-285. Return via US-285 east and I-70 east back to Colorado Springs.
When to Go
July – August
Peak summer. Road fully clear, wildflowers on the tundra. Can be busy on weekends. Go early to beat clouds.
Late Sept – Early Oct
The absolute prime time. Aspen gold carpets the entire lower and mid sections. One of Colorado's top fall foliage drives.
June
Snow often lingers near the summit into June. Check road conditions — the CDOT website has live updates.
