Colorado's Most Scenic Loop
Colorado Highway 12 — the "Highway of Legends" — is one of the state's designated scenic byways and one of the most rewarding supercar drives in the entire southern Rockies. The route loops through Trinidad, over La Veta Pass, through the shadow of the Spanish Peaks, and back down to Walsenburg — 82 miles of sweeping mountain curves, volcanic formations, and high-country beauty with virtually no traffic.
Why This Route is Special
The Spanish Peaks — twin volcanic summits rising to 12,683 and 13,626 feet — dominate the skyline for most of the drive. These peaks were sacred to the Ute people and served as landmarks for the Santa Fe Trail. Radiating out from the summits are over 400 dramatic "dikes" — vertical rock walls thrust up through the earth when magma cooled in ancient cracks. You'll drive through several of them on HWY 12.
The road surface is pristine paved highway — perfect for a supercar. Fast sweeping curves, no traffic, and unobstructed views make this the best pure driving experience within two hours of Colorado Springs.
The Route
Trinidad → La Veta → Walsenburg → I-25 return — ~82 miles + 2 hr return, full day
Start: Trinidad (6,025 ft)
Trinidad is a beautifully preserved Victorian mining town with great breakfast spots. Fuel up at Rino's Italian Kitchen or grab coffee on Main Street before heading out on HWY 12 north.
Stonewall (Mile 15)
Named for the dramatic vertical rock dike that crosses the valley like a fortress wall — you drive directly through a gap in it. One of the most visually arresting moments on the entire route.
Monument Lake & North Lake (Miles 20–25)
Two mountain lakes nestled beneath the Spanish Peaks. Pull over for photos — the reflection of the peaks on calm mornings is stunning. The road gets twistier and more exciting here.
Cuchara Pass (9,941 ft) (Mile 35)
The high point of the drive. The road narrows and climbs through aspen groves before cresting the pass — on the other side opens a completely different landscape of ranches and wide valleys.
La Veta (Mile 50)
A charming mountain arts town worth a stop for lunch. The Spanish Peaks loom dramatically over the town to the south.
Walsenburg & I-25 (Mile 82)
Return via I-25 south back to Colorado Springs — about 1.5 hours. Or make it a full loop by returning through Pueblo on I-25 with a stop at Royal Gorge.
